Feeling the pinch

Research conducted in April this year highlighted the financial pressures facing IT departments within companies. According to CIO Magazine’s latest Tech Poll of 200 IT leaders, computing budgets are expected to increase by an average of just three per cent this year. This is down from the six per cent reported last year.

However, it was also shown that budget increases are being planned for by nearly half of the CIOs polled, which was up from the 32 per cent recorded during the previous study. Also, only one in five of these officers anticipate cuts to their budgets.

Outsourcing is in vogue

In addition, the poll revealed that CIOs are increasing their spending on outsourced IT services, while mobile, wireless and applications are other areas that are being targeted.

The survey also revealed that spending on new projects is relatively consistent compared with a year ago, with 55 per cent of respondents planning to increase the percentage of their total IT budgets allocated to new projects, compared with 54 per cent in April 2011.
